Our Impact

West Scarborough Neighbourhood Community Centre has responded to the needs of the communities that we serve for over 60 years.

Read some recent achievements and stories below from people whose lives have been impacted by the work we do.

As a first time mother with no friends with young kids it has been invaluable the resources and connections made possible thru this location close to my home. I've gained knowledge from staff and by taking the Public Health workshops offered. I've maintained friendships with other parent/caregivers and my now toddler has regular playdates with children met on site.

When I first started my placement, I had lots of questions on how the EarlyON program would enhance my knowledge of community health and benefit me as a nursing student. However, as the weeks went by and I started understanding the reasons why these programs exist, how they work, who the target population is, all opened up my view on how these programs positively affect the community. When working with parents/caregivers and their children, I was able to recognize the needs of these families at different levels. This placement helped me reinforce the importance of how having great programs such as these for young children during their early development can help positively shape their future. It also allowed me to understand that community health has to be an integral process and cannot just look at a particular group or level. For example, these programs allowed me to understand that if we want to work with children we must also include the parents/caregivers. Also, this placement allowed me to see the importance of community in general. Although, the participants come from different ethnic, educational, social and economic backgrounds, they were a cohesive and inclusive group of individuals. During my interactions with them, I learned a lot from them.

Additionally, this placement was very beneficial to me on a personal level. As a parent myself, I learned so much about parenting, community resources available to parents and children and in general what organization such as WSCNC offer for the community.

I would like to thank everyone at the EarlyON program for making my placement a very positive one especially my preceptor, Thenmolly She was very professional, encouraging, welcoming, knowledgeable, easy to communicate with, clear with her expectations and very helpful. I also want to thank everyone at WSNCC for being welcoming, respectful and inclusive.

The staff care equally about the children and adults who attend the many programs at the Center.

I especially appreciate how the staff send home sick kids and enforce the peanut restriction. I know when we attend the Early On center we are in a safe and clean place that makes our neighbourhood a close knit community.

The EarlyON Centre is the best program for the kids under 5 years of age. This program helps the child to develop their skills like sharing, caring, loving and making new friends. This program also helps parents to understand more about their kids. Staff here is so friendly also help parents giving tips about child development and how parents can help. This program also helps child to be ready for school.

I would like to share my story. I was new to Canada and the parent of a 4 years old boy who was behind in speech and found it hard to follow instructions when I learned about the EarlyON Centre. Then I learned about the “Meeting the Milestones” Program and we attended that program. I was given information and referrals after which we got a diagnosis. My son found it very difficult at first but with support from the teacher he slowly started to participate, play and enjoy the activities better. He became more comfortable so after a time I didn”t need to be right next to him. I saw a drastic change in him in the time we attended which was only 4-5 weeks. After this he started school. I wish I had come to know about this program earlier so I could have brought him sooner.

According to me I will recommend every parents to bring here and see how they are.
